This painting, attributed to Johan Zoffany, shows students sketching from casts in the Royal Academy's Antique School at New Somerset House. The Keeper, George Moser R.A., supervises from a desk at the right. Oil lamps with reflectors illuminate the casts, which include the Dancing Faun, Belvedere Torso, Cincinnatus, Apollo Belvedere and Borghese Gladiator. During this period it was obligatory for R.A. students to spend several years making studies from classical sculptures before progressing to the life model.
