George Frederic Watts RA (1817 - 1904)
RA Collection: Art
A sheet of sketches, in black chalk, of floating female figures. These drawings possibly relate to the chain of similar figures in Watts's painting 'Chaos' (1875-82, Tate Britain and c. 1847-73, Watts Gallery). It could also relate to other, similar works by Watts including 'The Genius of Greek Poetry' (particularly the version in the Harris Art Gallery, Preston, c. 1875) and a related work, 'The Island of Cos' (1869, Private Collection). In general, Watts used floating figures to represent ideas such as the passing of time or the process of poetic thought.
