The Earl of Yarborough admired Gibson's 'Sleeping Shepherd Boy' and commissioned him to sculpt a graceful female figure. Gibson's increasing workload meant the Earl had to wait six years before receiving the sculpture. He was placated with progress reports from Rome, in one of which Gibson described the work as:

"A nymph sitting, and whilst arranging her sandal, her attention is drawn off, which gives a momentary suspense to her occupation. Her form is slender and very youthful."
