William Cotton (fl. 1834 - fl. 1843)
RA Collection: Art
A watercolour landscape with a tall tree on the left, buildings in the distance and a figure in the centre foreground wearing a hat and a red suit. William Cotton was a Derby porcelain painter and this scene, along with the others on the same mount, is typical of the sort of rural landscape that was popularly depicted on plates and other porcelain ware in the early to mid-19th century. This drawing was previously in the collection of either John Homes Smith or his son, J. H. Smith, both of whom were involved in the porcelain painting industry.
