Having moved from Scotland to London in 1862, Pettie and his wife first lived in Gloucester Road, Regent's Park in a house previously occupied by William Powell Frith R.A. However the location of the photograph, as confirmed by a copyright form of 1883, [National Archives, Kew], is Pettie's studio in 'The Lothians', a house he had built for his famly in Fitzjohn's Avenue, Hampstead. According to The Art Journal1893, the studio was considered the finest in London.
