The cast is of a modillion and is in the Galleria dei Candelabri (H: 22, W: 20.5, D: 21). It is currently mounted upside down and supports a statue of Cupid in the sleep of death.
It was part of the collection of casts of Thomas Lawrence which were sold on auction on 10 May 1830 and acquired by the Royal Academy. The sales catalogue has eleven entries for "Ornament from Vatican".
