Tennyson's frienship with the poet Arthur Hallam dated from their time at Trinity College, Cambridge. Both were members of the debating society, the Apostles. Their relationship grew as they worked together, paid visits to each other's family and as Hallam became engaged to Tennyson's sister Emily. Michael Thorn, is his biography of Tennyson, suggests that Arthur Hallam's sudden death whilst on holiday in Vienna in 1833, was the spur to Tennyson's public ambition as a poet. At the time of the photogravure, Chantrey's bust of Arthus Hallam was in the possession of his sister's family.
