Standing female nude, a study for 'The Glamour of the Rose', by 1896

This drawing and the two similar studies on the same type of dark brown wove paper are almost certainly preparatory drawings for the female figure in Goscombe John's relief sculpture The Glamour of the Rose (exhibited 1896; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff). The three drawings resemble work by established artists of the period like Lord Leighton, Edward Burne-Jones and G.F. Watts. Goscombe John was taught byt Leighton at the Royal Academy Schools and was also advised by Burne-Jones.

This sheet is signed on the bottom left "W. G. J" and appears to have come into the collection along with a group of Goscombe John's life drawings produced during his year in Paris (1890-91).
