Some remarks on the state of learning and the fine-arts in Great Britain, on the deficiency of public institutions, and the necessity of a better system for the improvement of knowledge and taste / by James Millingen.
The author compares the national support for learning and the arts in Europe (principally in France) and in Great Britain. He offers "some remarks on the few National Establishments we possess" including the British Museum (p. 22-48) and the Royal Academy of Arts (p. 48-51).
Bound with the pamphlet are several manuscript items including two letters addressed to [Sir] Richard Westmacott:
A. A list entitled 'Ordinary Parliamentary Grants to The British Museum from 1800 to 1820
B. A letter from James Millingen dated August 12, 1831, from 178 Rue Montmartre, Paris, addressed to R. Westmacott at 13 South Audley Street.
C. A letter from The British Museum dated September 6, 1831, to Richard Westmacott Esq. signed with an illegible signature regarding the funding of the British Museum.
D. a list entitled 'A Return of all Grants made by Parliament to the British Museum 1822-1831 inclusive'
