Master the elements of composition in this five-week online course.
During this practical art-making course you will explore how artists from the academies of Europe built complex compositions by following a rigorous preparatory process. Working with artist Emyr Williams you will use a variety of media, including graphite, conte, charcoal and gouache to learn the fundamentals of building a composition. You will practise the aesthetic rules championed by the likes of Frederic, Lord Leighton PRA and explore how you can use, or break, these rules in your own contemporary practice.
Week one: Mapping perspective in landscape and architecture
Week two: Drawing figures
Week three: Depicting figures in costume
Week four: Objects and colour
Week five: Adding colour to composition
At the end of each class you will be given a learning task to expand on the lesson’s activities. Every session will include an interactive feedback session with Emyr using the online sharing platform, Padlet.
Materials are not provided, but participants will receive a recommended materials list prior to the start of the course.
